Dawson’s Creek 2.2, Crossroads: “Get Over Yourself, Dawson! Deal!”
Summary: Mitch and Gail catch Dawson and Joey making out on his bed, leading Mitch to have a talk with Dawson about birth control. Gail tries to have a similar talk with Joey, even giving her a book about preventing teen pregnancy. Pacey fails his driver’s test by one point on his 16th birthday, and when Dawson doesn’t catch the significance of the date, Pacey realizes that his best friend has forgotten his birthday. He tells Jen that his family always ignores his birthday, but Dawson has always made up for that. Jen agrees with him that Dawson’s too busy fawning over Joey to remember anything. Jen encourages him to go out and meet some new people to celebrate with. “I’m gonna get my own storyline!” Pacey meta-declares.
Jen runs into Abby, who taunts her about being uncool. Jen tells her (or makes stuff up) about life in New York, earning a new fan. Dawson tells Joey he’s glad he was caught with a girl who already knows his parents. He’s also happy that they already know everything about each other. She tells him there’s plenty he doesn’t know about her, and when she leaves the room, Dawson starts reading her diary. Whatever he reads shocks him. Later, he tells Pacey (who’s planning a big party on a pier) that Joey complained in her diary about how stupid his movie is. She called him “a talentless dreamer with no cinematic future.” Pacey tells him that his life isn’t that interesting, and he’s sick of hearing about Dawson and Joey: “Get over yourself, Dawson! Deal!”
Mitch talks to a friend about his marriage while Gail talks to Grams about the same thing. Mitch doesn’t think Gail would mind if he had an affair, since that would let her off the hook for what she did. Grams, however, thinks Gail needs to do whatever she needs to save her marriage. She suggests that they renew their vows. Mitch would rather consider an open marriage.
Dawson asks Joey her opinion of his movie, and she tells him she loves it and he’s very talented. He keeps pressing the issue, leading her to figure out that he read her diary. They fight about his snooping and her lying, only agreeing that he doesn’t know her as well as he thought. Abby wonders why Jen would ever go for someone like Dawson, considering all the other guys she’s been with, and suggests that they go to Pacey’s party. Andie‘s brother Jack gets a job at the Ice House, but does nothing interesting in his first scene.
Andie, who Pacey told not to come to the party, shows up anyway, telling Pacey that meeting new people makes her nervous and tongue-tied. He finds that hilarious, since she hasn’t stopped talking since they met. “You don’t make me nervous, you make me angry,” she says. She urges Pacey to go talk to a senior cheerleader, noting that some older women like younger men. (Har har.) He wishes he made Andie nervous so she would shut up. Jen gets drunk and tries to throw herself at Dawson, who isn’t into it.
At the Ice House, Jack tells Joey he’ll finish closing up for her, despite the fact that it’s his first day at what’s apparently his first job, and he doesn’t even know how to wash dishes. Dawson confronts Pacey about his behavior, finally realizing that he forgot his best friend’s birthday. Pacey complains that their friendship is no longer as important as Dawson’s relationship with Joey. He doesn’t want to be a fifth wheel.
Mitch tells Gail that he doesn’t want a divorce, but they need to do make some changes. He blathers about sex and honesty and “new possibilities,” finally asking if she wants to try an open marriage. We don’t get to hear her answer. Back at the party, Dawson and Joey reconnect and are apparently fine even though they haven’t talked about their problems at all. He laments that he forgot Pacey’s birthday and made him really mad. Joey says that her diary is where she goes to express her feelings, especially over Dawson, and what she said about his movie was just what she was feeling that one time. She believes in him and his talent.
A drunk Jen and Abby see Dawson and Joey together, and Abby says they’ll be having sex sooner rather than later. Jen thinks they’re too much like brother and sister to do anything. She adds that Dawson told her he doesn’t think of Joey in a sexy way. Abby tells Jen she’s much more awesome than Joey, but Jen admits that she loves Dawson and wants him back. Abby vows to help her make that happen.
Andie gives Pacey a Magic 8 Ball, which tells him he’ll pass his driver’s test the next time he takes it. Before she can use it, she accidentally drops it in the water. He tells her he wanted to feel more secure with his life once he turned 16, and Andie says he’s still just figuring it out. Dawson helps Pacey clean up after the party, apologizing for focusing all of his attention on Joey. Pacey tells him he’s happy Dawson’s happy, he’ll just miss having Dawson around so much. Dawson promises that they’ll always be friends, then takes him for a boat ride.
Thoughts: Really, Joey? You could sue Dawson for reading your diary? Really?
Writers: NO ONE CARES ABOUT MITCH AND GAIL.
Joey asks Jack if he’s ever washed dishes, and he says he’s willing to learn. I don’t know, Jack, it’s a job that requires a lot of skill and training.

“Get over yourself, Dawson! Deal!” pretty much sums up this entire show.
